The Guest List by Lucy Foley is her fifth standalone novel and could be best categorized as the little sibling Caper Mystery novel that never thought it was good enough and so it had do everything better. Mystery told by the criminal’s POV? How about five POVs where you don’t know who to trust? Red herrings? How about not know who the victim is until the end? The mystery unravels as told through five points of view: the Bride, the Maid of Honor, the Wedding Planner, the Best Man, and the Plus One. You start with the Plus One and are thinking, “Who cares? The wedding party didn’t even really invite you,” but Foley’s voice is so endearing that you are immediately taken with her. Especially when you meet the other three. Along with having to deal with five unreliable narrators, you don’t learn who the victim is until the final pages of the story. Foley’s got you hook, line, and sinker with these two narrative devices. Other mystery authors may have done this before, but Foley does it with such finesse that you don’t even realize you’re being sucked into the bog on this tiny, remote island in the middle of the Atlantic, thinking you’re hearing voices, until your head has slipped below the earth and you realize you should have called for help.
Then, you’ll wake up, realize you have been reading, and eagerly dive back into the story.

]]>The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler is a Detective Mystery Novel…Chandler’s writing style feels like the 1930s and gives you images of black and white noir films. This story seems to have a simple plot—detective gets hired to stop his client from being black-mailed—that resolves in the middle of the story. But suddenly you’re confronted with a labyrinth of Daedalus proportions…

]]>And Justice There is None by Deborah Crombie is a Detective Mystery Novel. It is the 8th book in an 18-book series (with more on the way) in the Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James mystery series. If you’re more of a traditionalist, you can start with the first book in the series, A Share in Death. Otherwise, Crombie drops you into the story and you’re none the wiser. The number one thing to watch out for is where you'd like to start in Duncan and Gemma's relationship. (Hint, if you want to see them fall in love, start with the beginning. If you want to see them move in together, start with this book).
Pick up your copy soon. And Justice There is None is Crawford's Books’ April Book Club pick. Grab your copy today and then join the virtual meeting on April 8, from 6:30-7:30pm.

]]>Wild Boar in the Cane Field follows the story of young Tara who, orphaned as a baby, is raised by the proprietress of a tiny village in Pakistan and her servant. Though there are strict customs regarding a woman’s life, Tara is brought up by two women who have seemingly found a loophole to live their lives by their own standards. The proprietress, Baba Saffiya, lived past her father and husband, and so is free to run her lands as she sees fit. Amman Bhaggan, though a servant, wields great power in Baba Saffiya’s house. Their shared widowhood has not condemned Baba Saffiya or Amman Bhaggan to a destitute life. With such role models, Tara learns to ask questions and to demand the promise of her dreams. Skirting religious and gender taboos, she becomes educated and forges her own path to freedom. Wild Boar in the Cane Field is an intriguing foray into Pakistan customs, culture, and people. To purchase this book, support your local, independent bookstore and check out Crawford's Books.
